Style conscious Bollywood stars dress up for Diwali

MUMBAI  - From a time when Bollywood stars only wore traditional outfits during festivals, they are now emptying their pockets in high-end designer shops to experiment with their look for "Diwali".

Bollywood has seen an evolution of fashion from the mid 1990's when ornate traditional outfits dominated. Many stars now have hired their own style gurus who constantly innovate with their look and wardrobe.

Bollywood designers say this "Diwali", the Hindu festival of lights, will see the actors mixing simple formal shirts and trousers with rugged jackets and leather shoes. Some may even prefer the traditional bright coloured lavish kurtas.

"The men will be simple and sober but classy and urban," said Narendra Kumar, whose list of clients include Bollywood star John Abraham and directors Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Rakesh Roshan.

For the women, designers have dished out a wide range of outfits from the plunging neckline tops and shirts to skirts and shiny dresses. The traditional stitch work and printed salwar-kameez in golds, reds, greens and blues are in demand too.

"The preference is tilted towards wearing the traditional stuff this time," said designer Anita Dongre, who dresses up the likes of Mallika Sherawat. "But there is a great demand for the Western outfits too. Westerns are must for the Diwali parties."

Designers also feel the Bollywood icons will prefer wearing their attitude this "Diwali" rather than following a trend.

"This Diwali will see a lot of bling and shine from our stars and everyone will try to look as different from the other as possible," said Raghavendra Rathore. "Now the stars want to set a trend and not follow one."

Designs on Bollywood <+> About dressing up Chak De gals - Sagarika and Vidya

When Farah Khan is among your closest friends and Chak De girls Sagarika Ghatge and Vidya Malvade model your designs, you would presumably headed for Bollywood. Not Babita Malkani, "There are several offers but I am still contemplating. With my family and professional commitments, I find designing for films tad tedious. But I am not saying never, you never know what's in store for me tomorrow," she surmises reflectively.

Speaking of stores, she just launched her design store Babita M in Juhu, Mumbai recently. Chak De gals Sagarika Ghatge and Vidya Malvade modelled her designs which mostly is "fusion and trendy, not traditional Indian.

Her association with Sagarika and Vidya goes back to their post release events for which she dressed them,"I gave them casual chic clothes and accessories and they loved it," she announces happily.

Her latest collection comprises of dresses and trouser tops in "chiffons and geogettes with Swaroski work". Her favourite lot is the "satin with lots of texturing - with leather, lycra and prints" and she often gets her own prints worked on the fabric,"That's my speciality," she points out.

Babita's filmy friends always subscribed to her sense of style and patronised her designs. Geeta Basra, Niharika Khan, Achla Sachdev, Neha Hirani(Kimaya store owner) and Aparna Tilak attended the launch of the store.

Not formally trained in fashion, Babita claims that fashion "runs in her blood" as her family business is that of fabrics and garments. She was always fashionable and she started a garage boutique just after college and soon she was supplying her designs to stores all over Mumbai.

She launched an outlet in New York and her "bling" dresses with sequins and emobroidery detailing turned out to be hot favourites with tourists as well as natives.

Ask her about the most stylish Bollywood actress and she says,"Definitely Bipasha Basu, she can carry off any dress with complete ease. Preity Zinta is always fashionably correct."

Making her fashion statement, Babita says,"Wear anything you are comfortable and confident in. The best of my balloon dresses is going no where if it doesn't suit you. Think of the occasion and wearability of the garment," she concludes.

Shilpa Shetty's Bollywood musical savaged by critics

Celebrity Big Brother star Shilpa Shetty suffered a new humiliation as her new venture, musical Miss Bollywood was panned by critics.

The Bollywood actress became a household name after she stood up to Big Brother bullies Jade Goody and Danielle Lloyd and ex-S Clubber Jo O'Meara.

But critics have savaged her new show, with one branding it an "ill-conceived, half-baked star vehicle".

Shilpa stars in the show which is set in London in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics.

Mayor Benjamin (Josh Moran) has decided that his opening gala should be a celebration of cultural diversity at the same time as he decrees the demolition of some of the buildings standing in the way of the building of an Olympic Village.

And Shetty plays Maya, a naïve and modest dancer who has come from India to invest all of her savings into a Bollywood Dance Academy in one of the buildings.

Disappointment: It is the latest in a string of disappointments for Shilpa since leaving the Big Brother house following the racist row which catapulted her to fame

The show, scripted by the Bollywood screenwriter Niranjan Iyengar, exploits Shetty's Celebrity Big Brother ordeal, which at the time caused a national outcry.

And it includes jokes about her notorious kissing encounter with Richard Gere, which saw the star disgraced in her homeland and almost prosecuted for indecency.

The Times' arts critic Sam Marlowe dismissed the show as "lacklustre".

Marlowe said: "It's a shame that, having endured Celebrity Big Brother with such dignity, she has gone on to capitalise on the experience with a substandard project that reeks of cynicism."

Lacklustre: Critic Sam Marlowe called the production, which is touring in the regions, 'lacklustre' and 'mechanical'

He added: "The dancers are mechanical, the script diabolical, the acting amateurish and the costumes look nastily cheap.

"It all lacks brio and excitement; and though she is elegant to the last, Shetty alone isn't enough to make it worthwhile."

Critic Kevin Bourke of the Manchester Evening News was a little kinder. He said: "...the last twenty minutes or so of this Bollywood-on-stage fantasy are fantastic fun...".

But he added: "With its Big Brother, Richard Gere and 'goody, goody' gags, the show can feel like a panto".

It is the latest in a string of disappointments for Shetty who has failed to capitalise on her fame since leaving the Big Brother house.

Miss Bollywood is currently touring the UK.

Bollywood star Zayed Khan's formula to staying ahead in India's competitive movie industry

SINGAPORE: He may have been born into the cradle of the Bollywood movie industry but pursuing his career in movies was not a career option for him at the start.

It was the world of finance that gripped the attention of Zayed Khan, better known as the son of former Indian superstar Sanjay Khan.

However, after enrolling for a degree in Business, Zayed Khan's focus switched to studying film-making, then acting and not before long, he starred in a Bollywood Blockbuster beside reigning Indian megastar, Shah Rukh Khan.

Zayed Khan vividly recalls his childhood memories especially during play time, when his sister and friends would engage in role-playing but he was never allocated a leading role. While this did dampen his spirit in pursuing his career in movies, it did help that he was privileged to watch the actual shooting of movies frequently and that he said, "was like the most glamorous and entertaining thing to be on".

Constantly being surrounded by the industry's bigwigs, it definitely ignited a desire in him to be part of movies.

Zayed Khan's inadvertent big break came when he approached India's top choreographer Farah Khan to direct a script that he worked on but she had other plans designed for him. As Farah herself was looking at making her first feature film "Main Hoon Na" which means I'm Here for You, she ended up casting him alongside India's sweetheart Shah Rukh Khan.

Being cast in the award-winning movie, shot Zayed Khan to fame where he gained further recognition and success in the movie industry.

Intense competition is rife in India's movie industry and one of the greatest challenges that actors have to brave through. Zayed Khan's formula to staying glued to this industry is his undying passion to bring a character to life in his movies. Hence, it comes as no surprise that he feels chuffed when people still refer to him as 'Lucky', the character he played in "Main Hoon Na" as he believes that he has done justice to his role in the film.

Amid his frenzied filming schedule, Zayed Khan is currently in Istanbul shooting for his next film, Mission Istanbul, directed by Apoorva Lakhia. One that would deal with terrorism and action, Zayed Khan said this is one of those movies that he has been waiting for ages to star in.

Bollywood releases pit Dostoevsky vs reincarnation

Photo

MUMBAI (Reuters) - An exotic tale of murder and reincarnation will battle a romantic musical inspired by Fyodor Dostoevsky's novella in two of this year's biggest Bollywood films opening on Friday.

Weeks of publicity have built up huge anticipation for "Om Shanti Om" and "Saawariya" (Beloved), the year's blockbusters for "Diwali", Bollywood's most important movie-going season coinciding with the Hindu festival of lights.

The industry, the world's largest by ticket sales, is waiting eagerly to see if the two films can reduce losses in a year in which most big productions have bitten the dust and only a few low-budget ventures have tasted moderate success.

Though its makers haven't said so, "Saawariya" is apparently inspired by Dostoevsky's sentimental novella "White Nights", where a chance meeting of a boy and a girl leads to unrequited love and heartbreak.

"Saawariya is a simple but exotic love story," director Sanjay Leela Bhansali wrote on the film's Web site (www.saawariyafilm.com). "True love is divine. It has to have yearning, disappointment and agony."

On the other hand, "Om Shanti Om", starring superstar Shah Rukh Khan, is more of an action drama.

Khan plays an aspiring actor of the 1970s who dies and is immediately reincarnated in the present day. He tries to solve the mystery of his death and find the lady love from his past life.

"The film's got so hyped it's scary. But it should do well because all of us have put our hearts into it," said Farah Khan, the choreographer-turned-director of "Om Shanti Om".

"It's a mad, mad film and is set in a period which was a memorable time for me, for Bollywood."

TEST FOR STAR KIDS

Only four of about 10 big releases this year have made profits, proving that star appeal or swanky locations were not enough to move audiences, trade analysts said.

"Saawariya" has no stars, but two star kids making their debut and attempting to live up to their family names.

Ranbir Kapoor, who belongs to one of Bollywood's oldest and most powerful dynasties, plays a young lover, much like his father Rishi, whose romantic roles made him an eternal lover-boy.

The Kapoor clan is one of the oldest in Bollywood.

Over seven decades ago, Prithviraj Kapoor -- Ranbir's great-grandfather -- began acting in silent movies and his sons Raj, Shammi and Shashi made it big and shoehorned their children into successful film careers.

Unrelated to the Kapoors is Sonam Kapoor, who pairs with Ranbir in "Saawariya". Her father, Anil Kapoor, was a successful hero who rarely acts these days.

The female lead of "Om Shanti Om" is also a debutant, Deepika Padukone, a model-turned-actor and the daughter of India's most famous badminton player.

Bollywood's new star shines

November 08, 2007

HER father is the veteran Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor, so one would assume his actress daughter Sonam Kapoor, is used to living life in the spotlight.

But for the Indian beauty, being propelled to superstardom, courtesy of her new movie Saawariya, has been a shock, especially considering her father and academically-minded mother sheltered Kapoor and her two young siblings from fame and fortune while growing up.

"My father is famous, he's been doing films for more than 30 years, but that doesn't mean we were out there," the 22-year-old says from her home in India.

"I was in boarding school and at college, so I was never in touch with that (fame). My father never let me on the set or allowed me to go to premieres because my mum comes from a very different background where they are all doctors and lawyers, and she was never happy with the whole thing.

"She kept us away from it as much as possible because she wanted us to have a normal life. But thankfully I have been dealt the beautiful hand now of becoming an actor."

In the glittering world of Bollywood, fans treat their A-list stars as royalty, something that Kapoor will soon have to get used to following her turn in Saawariya, her debut film as an actress.

While she has worked with the film's director Sanjay Leela Bhansali for more than four years behind the camera as an assistant on other films, it's only recently that she discovered her passion for acting.

The first Indian movie produced by a Hollywood studio, Saawariya features show-stopping dancing, singing and romantic love scenes, and is based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's White Nights.

Kapoor, who is also in the process of completing a bachelor of arts in economics and diplomatic science at the University of Mumbai has also reportedly found love alongside her new career. She is said to be dating co-star Ranbir Kapoor (no relation) after the pair became close during the film's year-long filming schedule.

Saawariya revolves around a Hindu boy (Ranbir Kapoor) and a Muslim girl (Sonam Kapoor), and instead of running for three to four hours like most Bollywood films, is only 128 minutes in length.

The charming, free-spirited Raj is a dreamer, who comes to a quaint, picturesque town in Shimla, known for its lakes, mist and heavenly snowfalls. He believes he's found the perfect place to inspire his inner artist. Everything appears to be perfect until he stumbles across the shy, mysterious, and melancholic Sakina, a young woman hiding a secret past.

"Sakina is what any man would fall in love with because she hopes for love," Kapoor says.

"She is never negative, she never had a doubt in her mind that love won't succeed, and that is the beauty of her."

Kapoor is proud of her work and has enjoyed spruiking the film .

"My head is spinning," she says. "I have been counting down the days. It's been great to talk to people about something that I have worked so hard on. It's such a beautiful film and it's been exhilarating putting the word out there."

Bollywood artillery up for sale

Mokshada Batra/Vikram Thapa

Thursday, November 8, 2007: (Mumbai):

The new artillery of new age movies: Filmy merchandise.

Just as a film enters public imagination so do the clothes that make the film, like the two big Diwali releases.

Om Shanti Om has launched a range of retro fit clothes with mega retailer Shoppers Stop Limited which is a Rs 4 crore deal.

''Om Shanti Om is unique to us because we wanted to bring Bollywood film fashion aspirations to the consumers. And the only way we could have done this is to tie up with an organisation that also believes in quality. And here we found in Farah Khan and Vikram Phadnis a great combination. And when we looked at the line, this also gave us an opportunity of putting a whole range together. Otherwise generally in film merchandising, you can get one shirt or a T-shirt etc. Here you have a whole range of 170 items," said B S Nagesh, Customer Care Associate, MD, Shoppers Stop Limited.

This apart Om Shanti Om has joint ventures with Maybelline, Nokia and Sia Jewellery worth another Rs five crore.

Not to be outdone, Saawariya has lent its clothes and accessories to Pantaloon, which is worth Rs 15 crore.

''We did Krrish with Pantaloon before. Then did Hanuman but they were both character based. Kids toys sold a lot, the mask, the gadda of Hanuman. The difference and challenge here is that it's a love story, boy and girl, so categories wise it's gonna be lots of apparels, clothing, a lot of bed linen, accessories, emphasis on women cosmetics,'' said Navin Shah, CEO, P9 Integrated.

Over and above this, the advertising that Saawariya has managed from tie-ups with Citibank, Reliance Insurance, Xylitol, Airtel and Sony is Rs 10 crore in airtime.

In the words of an actor this is commerce as important as creativity.

''We are confident because huge entities, three of them, Sony Pics, Sanjay Leela Bansali and Future Group, are behind us,'' said Sonam Kapoor, lead actress, Saawariya.

Analysts say the Om Shanti Om and Saawariya goods are just the mega build up of promotion through merchandise that has been around for a few years now.

It was back in 1989 when this Salman Khan cap and jacket became a rage among teenagers. Five years later in 1994, the costumes of Hum Aapke Hain Kaun went under the hammer for fans. And Madhuri's Didi Tera Dewar Deewana saree fetched a whopping Rs 10 lakh.

That was the beginning, over the next years films like Waqt, Hum Saath Saath Hain and Hulchul tied up with top retail designers and released promo clothes lines.

''Priyanka Chopra's outfits in Waqt sold for upto Rs 7,000 each. And for Hulchul, Kareena's outfits of Rs 5,000 each sold more than 2,500 pieces in 60 days," said Sanjay Bindra, Director, BIBA Apparels Limited.

The clothes do well in India but even better in the NRI market, which is tapped through online auctions.

''It adds to their bottom line. These are costly clothes, so they can recover the money apart from the movie and the distribution," said Rajesh Seth, bollywoodauctions.com.

''Bollywood merchandising is becoming important. It has always been important in Hollywood. It is not soft toys that will sell, but garments," said Harish Tibrewal, Owner, homeindia.com.

Soon, Bollywood was to realise that there was big money to be made even in games.

So, Krrish obviously targeting the child market went overboard with T-Shirts, masks, bags, stationary and a whole range of video games. The new Don was smarter, he came in with swish mobile games.

"It's all part and parcel of promoting a film. Merchandise, games, cartoon strips, you have to do all this when a film is being released. And it will continue to be like this," said Shah Rukh Khan, actor.

''It will emerge as the biggest source of revenue as it is in Hollywood right now. We started learning how to merchandise," said Vipul Shah, Director, Waqt.
