Bollywood biggies headed to Dubai

Naseeruddin Shah, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Mithun Chakraborty and Manisha Koirala are among a host of eminent Indian film personalities who will walk the red carpet at the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) to be held here between December 9 and 16.

The 2007 edition of DIFF will see a separate section on Indian cinema called A Celebration of Indian Cinema that will showcase lesser-known cinematic traditions from different parts of India.

According to DIFF artistic director Masoud Amrala Al Ali, the eight-day festival will offer filmmakers from other centres in India such as Chennai, Kolkata and Thiruvananthapuram a bigger platform to showcase their work.

Internationally renowned Indian director Mira Nair will be here for her ensemble film AIDS Jaago, which comprises four short narrative films about HIV/AIDS. For this production, a joint effort between Mirabai Films and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Nair hired four of India's ace directors.

Nair will be accompanied by Raima Sen who features in Nair's segment of the ensemble called Migration, and Farhan Akhtar, who directed the segment called Positive, according to the Gulf Today newspaper.

Acclaimed director and cinematographer Santosh Sivan will also be here with two projects. One, his segment in AIDS Jaago called Parambha and the other is his English language debut Before the Rains .

Set in 1930s India, Before the Rains portrays the dilemma of a married British colonialist in India who is caught having an affair with his beautiful housemaid. According to the newspaper, Rahul Bose, who stars in the film along with Nandita Sen, has confirmed his participation in the film fest.

Naseeruddin Shah will be here for the world premiere of Shoot at Sight, a political thriller by Jag Mohan Mundhra set in London. The film features Om Puri and Shah, who plays the central role as a police commissioner torn between loyalties while investigating the killing of a terrorist by police. Shah's co-star Laila Rouass will also be here to promote the film.

The legendary icon of Malayalam cinema, Adoor Gopalakrishnan will be here with Naalu Pennungal (Four Women), which was released recently in Kerala to an enthusiastic response. The film, the director's 10th feature, portrays the struggles of women in a male-dominated society. With power packed performances from Padmapriya, Manju Pillai, Geetu Mohandas and Nandita Das, the film depicts the subjugation and undermining of Indian women of the southern region of Kerala. Padmapriya will also attend the festival.

Kabir Bedi will be here for the revised international director's cut of Taj Mahal. Manisha Koirala and Pooja Batra, who also star in the film, will join Bedi.

Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty will attend the festival for the world premiere of Lal Pahare'r Katha (A Story of the Red Hills), in which he plays the role of a tribal dancer whose innate love for the art form helps him overcome a failed relationship.

Among other Indian films to be screened at this year's festival are Frozen, starring newcomer Shivajee Chandrabhushan and seasoned actor Danny Denzongpa and Manish Acharya's Loins of Punjab

Indian cinema is indeed rich and diverse and we particularly thought it deserved its own section in the festival because of the large and enthusiastic Indian public here in Dubai," said Simon Field, artistic director of DIFF's international programming, while announcing the launch of the new Indian segment in the festival.

A large majority of this city of 1.4 million people are Indian expats.

Bored Of Acting? Shah Rukh Turns To Watch Selling!

Shah Rukh Khan has turned to selling luxury watches.. why? Because he's lost interest in his acting career!

Ya, ya.. it's a joke! But he is actually selling watches as the brand ambassador of a Swiss watch maker, Tag Heuer. And he's even got a partner with him… gorgeous actress Priyanka Chopra, with whom he appeared in a recent launch show at a polo club in New Delhi.

While Om Shanti Om is breaking all sorts of Box Office records with it's fine run in the theaters, SRK was spending his Sunday watching polo matches and launching luxury watches, wearing a nice black suit (it's chilling in Delhi right now).

Priyanka was also looking chick in a polka-dotted white dress.
The Don girl only recently managed a Rs 2 crore deal and is having a healthy relationship with budding actor Harman Baweja .

Apart from jokes, if SRK ever wants to leave Bollywood (though I hope it'll never happen)… I thinks he's got a nice career option!

Shoaib Akhter in Bollywood?

I have been hearing about Australian pacer Bret Lee and his upcoming Bollywood debut everyone's been buzzing about and it always made me wonder why no one ever offered our boys any roles?

Well guess what boys and girls! Our very own Paris Hilton, oops I meant Speedster, Shoaib Akhtar might be making HIS debut in Bollywood real soon!

"I have a piece of news for you. I have got an offer from Bollywood and will decide whether to work with them once I listen to the script,", is what Akhtar said to India Times on Sunday.

He said the producer and director would meet him with the script during the December 8-12 third Test against India in Bangalore. No idea as to who this producer and director are as of now.

I somehow just can not imagine Akhtar acting. I mean, he's a good bowler but will he fair as well in Bollywood is doubtful. For now I only hope this does not derail our Rawalpindi Express from what he is REALLY suppose to do; play for his country! He is known to get distracted quite easily by girls, night clubs, drinks, and what not.

But Shoaib Akhter in Bollywood? Someone please pinch me NOW!

It doesn't pay to be a Bollywood heroine

Bollywood producers feel that male actors are safer bet than their female counterparts
MUMBAI: Paycheques may well be getting plumper for Bollywood stars. But here's a rather unpalatable truth: the hefty hikes are reserved for the men, while the leading ladies are still very distant poor cousins.

Bollywood's heroes get a remuneration that's virtually ten times a heroine's. So if a Kareena Kapoor aims for Rs 5.5 crore for her next three films, Akshay Kumar has already gone past a whopping Rs 17 crore a film.

Supporting actors Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav get about a crore each, but Don girl Priyanka Chopra only recently managed a Rs 2 crore deal.

Madhuri Dixit-Nene may be aiming to rewrite Bollywood's rulebook with her comeback as the only mommy superstar, but the fact is that the box-office is almost cold to Aaja Nachle , and Madhuri's cheque for the film is nothing to crow about. Ditto with Aishwarya Rai's Umrao Jaan , which was a dud at the box office.

Contrast this with the business realities of Hollywood, where Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts command almost as much as their male counterparts. If a Tom Cruise gets $45 million for a film, Kidman is not far behind at $35 million. If Brad Pitt gets $29 million, Angelina Jolie earns $27 million.

In India, such parity looks impossible for now.

"The primary reason for the low remuneration of female stars is that films do not sell on their name, however big they may be," says a trade source.

Bollywood hotties promise sizzling New Year performances

Malaika AroraHold your breath guys. Some of the most desirable gals of Bollywood will strut their stuff on New Year's Eve.

They are hot and ready to rock. As many as six Bollywood hotties will set the temperature soaring with their performances at several New Year bashes organized by Country Club India Ltd (CCIL) all across India.

All the usual suspects are there: Malaika Arora , Amrita Arora , Neha Dhupia , Udita Goswami , Rimi Sen and Mahima Chaudhary .

Also add to the list the southie Sada and singer Usha Uthup.

The largest chain of family clubs in India, CCIL promises scintillating entertainment for its members on the night of December 31. The celebrations are in keeping with the club's new revamped image.

The bashes have been planned for eight cities: Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Cochin. Which celeb will perform in which city will be decided by an SMS poll exclusively for the members of the club.
Needless to say, the Arora sisters are expected to get maximum votes. Ms Dhupia, who has been intent on an image makeover recently, is also likely to let her hair hang down on Dec 31 and cut a sizzling performance. Rimi Sen and Udita Goswami are the two hotties who have never actually made it to the bandwagon of Bollywood sexbombs but are no less endowed in terms of sex appeal.

And if you don't happen to be a member of CCIL, there is no reason to rue. You can still catch Bipasha Basu doing booty-shakin on New Year's bash at Mumbai's J W Marriott. This would be the first time Bips is performing on Dec 31 night, and it promises to be a bash worth attending. You only need to shell out some moolah.

Now, Beer Man in Bollywood

new The shooting of the film Control is on in full swing and currently a song is being picturised on Mumbai's picturesque Marine Drive.

Though the film lacks star power, the interest lies in the subject. It is a movie about Ravindra Kantrole aka the beer man who had reportedly terrorized Mumbai a few months back.

Kantrole was later on released on bail.

The police alleged that he had killed a dozen odd pavement dwellers after befriending them and treating them to beer. Hence the name, Beerman.

The film, written from his perspective, talks about the issue of drugs, slowly gaining a foothold among the city's youths.

The song currently being picturised too has this tapori element and the lyric goes like Yeh Hai Mumbai Mere Baap Ki.

And while this is a unique story in itself, another astonishing story is that of lead hero Waqar Khan, who plays Kontrolu in the film. Its a dream story for Waqar, who started off as an auto-rickshaw driver.

He has worked successfully in Bhojpuri cinema, and this will be his first Hindi release. "I play Ravindra Kontrolu in the film and the film talks about drug issues with undertones of love element too" says Khan.

The story is on the lines of a mafia war, where Waqar Khan falls in love with the daughter of a drug mafia. Almost all the faces in the film are unknown, but the curiousity about the real-life subject might help the film.

View Welcome Movie Stills

Having gone through a super successful year with three top-ranking comedies, NAMASTEY LONDON, HEYY BABYY and BHOOL BHULAIYAA, Akshay Kumar is gearing up for the release of WELCOME, his next big laugh-out-loud comedy, releasing on December 20 worldwide.

WELCOME, being touted as the biggest release of Eid and Christmas, marks the return of the Akshay-Katrina pairing for a third time, besides assembling the biggest ensemble cast comprising Paresh Rawal, Anil Kapoor, Feroz Khan, Nana Patekar & Mallika Sherawat under one roof.

Akshay, shooting for SINGH IS KING in Australia at present, laughs, "Earlier, everyone said I was synonymous with action. I bagged the Khiladi tag. Now with my last few films being successful comedies, I've become synonymous with comedy!"

Ask him about his hit run at the box-office this year, he smiles, "I'm happy that the three comedies I did this year had the box-office laughing. WELCOME is the king of them all! It's a laugh-riot from the word go and I hope everyone enjoys it during the festive season as it is my last major comedy of 2007!"

So is Akshay bidding adieu to comedy? "Not at all! Comedy comes as naturally to me as action! Next year I have a variety of films on the anvil. I am getting back to action with CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA and TASHAN. But for me now I want everyone to concentrate on WELCOME and welcome the New Year with a bang!" he signs off.
