From Deepika's to-die-for wardrobe in Om Shanti Om to Amitabh's colourful, hippie style in Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, we have the low-down on the best-dressed stars of 2007.
Deepika Padukone in Om Shanti Om
Well, what can we say that hasn't been said already? This Bangalore stunner made our jaws drop with her super sexy look in Om Shanti Om. Be it the gorgeous ghagras and retro outfits she donned as Shantipriya or the uber cool hot pants and bustiers she sported as Sandy, Deepika oozed oomph in every single frame.
Punjab was hot on the Bollywood movie map in 2007 with several films being shot there. The Deols shot a major portion of their family saga Apne as did Kareena and Shahid Kapoor for Jab We Met and Katrina-Akshay for Namaste London.
Recently, Preity Zinta and Salman Khan were there too to shoot for Samir Karnik's Heroes. And last Thursday, Preity was back in Punjab for her second shoot in 2007 under heavy security.
After a gruelling month-long schedule of their first Punjabi film Heaven On Earth, Preity and director Deepa Mehta were in Chandigarh for a two-day shoot under tight security because fans in Punjab are known to get "hyper-excited" at the sight of their favourite stars.
A fortnight ago, when Ranbir Kapoor landed in Amritsar to shoot for Siddharth Anand's untitled film, thousands thronged the location near the Golden Temple and broke through the security cordon to get as close to the actor as they could.
Speaking from the outskirts of Chandigarh where she was shooting Friday and Saturday, Deepa said, "I don't know whether we're coming or going. Since we had only Preity's dates till Dec 24, we went straight from location in Toronto to the airport to rush to India... We're aware of the security risks. The administration has been very co-operative. We're well protected. And Preity has her own bodyguards. So far it's been smooth sailing."
Heaven On Earth, the true-life story of a battered wife in Toronto, has been Preity's toughest role to date.
New Delhi, Dec 26 : If anyone thought that the first ever joint counter terror exercise carried out by Indian and Chinese militaries in Kunming in China's Yunnan province would be an out and out serious affair, then one is grossly mistaken as it had a lot to do with cultural extravaganza and friendly bonhomie also.
So you had beautiful Chinese women swinging to songs from Sanjay Leela Bhansali's flick, Devdas, and Chinese military personnel dancing on the rhapsody steps of Bhangra.
As the five-day long military exercise between the two armies concluded on the Christmas day, the kind of jovial mood witnessed there could hardly give any one an inkling that these two countries fought each other almost half a century ago, and are still negotiating the controversial border dispute issue.
The chill in the weather was nowhere to be seen as women clad in bright red and gold ghagras and cholis swayed to the tune of 'Dola Re' trying to imitate histrionics of dancing diva Madhuri Dixit and beauty queen Aishwarya Rai, and they even succeeded to.
Bollywood may be a cliche, but it's a successful recipe that makes even Chinese dancers go gaga over it.
The dance numbers encapsulating Indian culture was on the cards but the Indian soldiers had no clue that it would be so warm and vibrant in Kunming, where the minimum temperature dipped to five degree Celsius.
During the day, when soldiers demonstrated their tactical skills of overcoming the hostage crisis, the evening was reserved for interaction and some 'celebration'.
Not only Bollywood dance beats, the Indian rum, Old Monk also made inroads into Chinese military's palate.
Mr Sippy was best known as the producer of Bollywood's biggest ever commercial success, Sholay (Flames). Sholay broke all previous records in India, earning the equivalent of $60m (£30m) at the box-office. The film, starring Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan and a number of other stars, ran continuously for more than five years at one cinema in Mumbai. Sholay, loosely styled on Akira Kurosawa's The Seventh Samurai and Hollywood's The Magnificent Seven, is commonly described as India's first "curry western". GP Sippy's film career spanned four decades, beginning with his first film, Marine Drive, in 1955. He produced some 20 films and directed many of them. But Sholay made him a household name. | ||
Dec 26: Though the year 2006 was the year of biggies in Bollywood who brought some excellent films, the year 2007 also stands no behind as the industry offers some outstanding movies with a mix of multi-starrer, comedy, art, low budget entertainer and films based of sports.
As usual though the ratio of hits and flops follows the old trend comparing the amount of movies the industry produces, the year 2007 has brought some of the best movies as Shahrukh Khan starrer 'Chak De! India' and then 'Om Shanti Om' and Mani Ratnam's 'Guru' top the list. However, it's the small budget film like 'Bheja Fry', 'Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd', 'Gandhi My Father' and some which became popular for their creativity.
Here's a brief summary of some of the biggest hits of the year 2007 as according to their box office collection and appeal to audience.
Guru (Release - Jan 12): A biographical movie inspired by the life story of late industrialists Dhirubhai Ambani, one of the best topics chosen by director Mani Ratnam was the first hit in 2007. The acting potential of both the leading actors Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai did come out aptly. The director recreating his on screen story telling magic like the past 'Roja' and ' Bombay' came up with a bang again in combination with AR Rahman music.
Namaste London (Release – March 23): The Akshya Kumar and Katrina Kaif starrer is an East-meets-West love story with a pack of romance, comedy and drama did able to catch the interest of audience with a theme that is more common, a story of a western-cultured girl who forced to marry an ordinary Indian and their marriage and so on. The film did good business in India but not in overseas. This was the second hit after a long dry month in Bollywood.
Partner (Release – July 20):Starring Salman Khan and Govinda, this David Dhawan comedy flick did well in the box office. Salman as love guru to Govinda in the course of helping teaching lesson how to win the loved one's heart produced enough laughter gimmicks that turned on movie buff.
Chak De! India (Release – Aug 10): Directed by Shimit Amit and produced under the Aditya/Yash Chopra banner, the film did the right justice taking the theme of our neglected national sports 'hockey'. The film is closely linked with the life of former Indian Hockey player and coach of Indian women's hockey team Mir Ranjan Negi. The film remains a cult, as it not only inspired other sports with its anthem Chak De! India but also made the sports administration to think about all other sports equally like the cricket.
Heyy Babyy (Release – Aug 24): Written and directed by small screen entertainer Sajid Khan, the film revolves around the life of three bachelors: Akshay Kumar, Ritesh Deshmukh, and Fardeen Khan and how a small baby changed their life for ever from careless human being to serious father figure. With emotion, drama, humour and music score by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the movie offered all-round entertainment. This was also the second hit in the cards of Akshya Kumar.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa (Release – Oct 12): A simple ghost story but director Priyadarshan with his superb comic delivery ability along with Akshya Kumar, Vidya Balan, Shiney Ahuja and Rajpal Yadav created a magical spell of wittiness that produced enough laugh riot along with mystery, discovery and surprises which resulted in making it a box office hit.
Jab We Met (Release – Oct 26): Director Imitaz Ali in his attempt to bring Shahid Kapur and Kareena Kapoor together able to create on screen magic with a story line of two individual and how deep love emerged within them for being together. This romantic comedy has enough material for each one and hence gave upward mark to both Shahid and Kereena's film career. The film's promotion also got boost from the real-life break-up and Kareena's love interest in Saif Ali Khan.
Om Shanti Om (Release – Nov 2007): This is so far the biggest blockbuster of 2007 with excellent box office response. The second movie of director Farah Khan with high pre-promotion did able to catch audience's attention and Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan yet again proved that he is the superstar with huge fan following. Taking characters of 60's and 70's the film again proved that Shahrukh, romance with song and dance still works.
Tare Zameen Par (Release – Dec 21): Amir Khan in his first directorial endeavour proved his cinematic excellence not only in acting but also making and directing film on a sensitive issue based on children. The film revolves around a dyslexic child who lost himself down in front of high expectation. This film again proves the versatility of Amir and probably the talented one among three Khans.
This is an admirable finish to 2007 !!!
Priyanka is caught up in the F-word these days. No, don't get us wrong. It's Madhur Bhandarkar's latest film Fashion which is keeping her busy all the time.
As she says herself, "I have been so busy these days that I have found no time to introspect. Fashion is the only movie right now that I am going to be taking a lot of stress over."
2007 has been a cold year for this former Miss World but Priyanka is eagerly looking forward to 2008 in which she will feature in as many as half dozen films.
"This year I had a sort of sabbatical year and this year just two releases. But 2008 will be my busiest calendar as I would be acting in six films. I have acted in about 20 films in my four-year-old cinema career so far and 2008 will be the busiest," says Priyanka.
Her new releases coming out in the next one year include: God Tussi Great Ho with Salman Khan and Amitabh Bachchan , Love Story 2050 with Harman Baweja , Drona with Abhishek Bachchan , Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion , another film called Chamki Chameli and a yet-to-be-named film with John Abraham as co-star.
Priyanka also tells that there were some calls from the Hollywood to act in English films, but she first preferred to 'master' acting in Indian films.
But coming back to on-screen fashion travails, it is her off-screen fashion issues that are in the news.
At a recent polo event in the city, Priyanka apparently refused to wear a Rohit Bal gown that was provided by the organisers. Priyanka, however, dismisses it as a mix of mere speculation and a lot of gossip. "Not at all! I have absolutely no issue there. In fact, I love Rohit's work.
That day when I came for the event, I had a choice of outfits from various designers. A lot of them did not fit me because I had not done trials in Mumbai before coming for the event. And so, whatever fit me, I wore it for the event. I couldn't have managed the fitting here in Delhi because we were running late. We were really tight on time," she says.

She was the first woman and the fifth generation in the Kapoor's clan to have green eyes. She made her film debut with Prem Qaidi (1991) opposite Harish. Following this, Kapoor went on to star in several films which were unsuccessful at the box office, and encountered several negative reviews and criticisms for becoming typecast. Trying to reinvent her image, she took on more serious characters and diverse roles, and was soon recognized for her versatility as an actress. Her portrayal of a sex-worker in Chameli (2004)
proved to be the turning point in her career and won her the Filmfare Special Performance Award. She was noted for her performances in critically acclaimed films like Dev (2004) and Omkara (2006), and earned two Critics Award for Best Actress at the Filmfare. Biography
Aishwarya Rai's striking beauty might make her seem an obvious fit as a model, but the truth is that India's 1994 Miss World winner originally took up modeling as a part-time job to get her through school. She was studying to be an architect, but due to her obvious talent on-stage and in front of the camera, -- most notably in a wildly popular Pepsi campaign -- the starlet began accepting the movie offers that had been pouring in. Rai began her reign as Bollywood's favorite leading lady in the film Iruvar, following it up that same year with ...Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya. They both earned her critical praise and the latter brought her a Best Female Debutante Award. More awards would follow, including Best Actress by Filmfare and Zee Cine for 2000s Straight from the Heart. As the actress put more and more films under her belt, her position as India's darling cemented. Her role in 2002's Devdas was especially auspicious; the movie was the most
successful in Bollywood history and received a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival -- the first Bollywood film to receive such an honor. The next year found Rai making still more headway for Bollywood when she became the first Indian member of the grand jury at Cannes.
By 2004, Rai had appeared in well over 20 films in just seven years, and it was finally time for her to star in her first English-language film. The Hollywood/ Bollywood crossover hit Bride and Prejudice reworked Jane Austen's classic love story Pride and Prejudice with the Bollywood film style, bringing together Eastern and Western actors, as well as themes. The film proved to be yet another successful example in Rai's history of helping to bring India's culture and film into the world spotlight, delighting fans all over the globe. Having sampled Hollywood, Rai was now ready to make a serious foray into American films. She signed on to star with Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley in 2007's historical epic The Last Legion as well as French director Coline Serreau's remake of her 2001 film Chaos, which would cast Rai alongside Meryl Streep.

So, all the rumours about Soha and Siddharth (from Rang De Basanti) were not baseless and the couple is actually together and rocking.
The duo can be spottedat various city hotspots. Not only that, we hear that Siddharth has met Saif and his parents and the family has actually put the stamp of approval on his romace with Soha.
Says a source, "It was during the shooting of Rang De Basanti that Soha and Siddharth became extremely close. They had been in a relationship for more than a year but couldn't come out openly with it because he had gone through a divorce from his childhood girlfriend Meghna, last year. "
"Siddharth is a reserved person, he liked Soha's bubbly nature and positivity towards life. Gradually, they both discovered that they had more than a deep affection for each other.
Saif asked Soha over to his Bandra apartment along with her boyfriend. When she arrived, she was surprised to see her parents present as well. Saif had called them over dinner to meet his little sister's object of affection," he adds.
We hear that within minutes of meeting Siddharth, Saif was completely charmed while mom and dad too were impressed with the guy's down-to-earth attitude.
Siddharth based in Mumbai-now for the shooting of Chandan Arora's Striker.

'Jhalak Dikhla Jaa' has done wonders for the 19 year old Prachi Desai. The hit serial 'Kasamh Se' won good reviews for Prachi, but her choreographer Deepak transformed the girl totally to a glamorous doll and dancing diva in ' Jhalak'.
Now, Prachi has bagged in the lead role in a film opposite Farhan Akhtar. Titled 'Rock On', this film is going to be Farhan's debut vehicle too (in acting).
The film, to be produced by Farhan and his friend Ritesh Sidhwani will deal with a contemporary theme with great music. The film will be directed by Abhishek Kapoor and the producers intend to finish shooting for the film by March 2008.
Prachi is all excited and adds, "The shooting of Rock On begins in February next year. We are just waiting for Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa competition to get over. I am very blessed to have got this kind of an opportunity. I have been a big fan of Farhan Akhtar since class 8, and now both of us will be making our acting debut together. I couldn't have asked for a better break."
Prachi has already planned her schedule and decided to block her dates for her film. She may take a temporary hiatus from TV once the shooting starts. The little girl is set to reach great heights!

Geeta 'filmy' Basra, a self proclaimed Bollywood buff and the biggest Madhuri Dixit fan ever continues to be awestruck by Madhuri Dixit even after the no-show of her Aaja Nachle at the box office.
"Whatever be the fate of the film, I don't really care", says Geeta who seduced audience with her act in The Train earlier this year. "For me, it was a dream come true to watch a Madhuri Dixit film in Mumbai, especially after seeing all her films in UK, my home country."
"Moreover, the film worked for me. Yes, there is bound to be bias at my end since I have been her fan since my childhood but then that's obvious, isn't it", she questions. "Each and every dance step of hers made the film so special for me. I was thrilled to see her carry herself so gracefully while playing her part in such an elegant manner."
Reflecting on the fact that the film was unable to connect with the audience, Geeta says, "Maybe majority of the audiences still have that romantic image of hers in mind. If there was a bona fide male lead alongside her with her comeback vehicle being centered on a love story, acceptance of that film may have been much higher."
"However, these are just ifs and buts. For me, Aaja Nachle would remain special regardless of it's fate. I have been a Madhuri fan and would continue to do so. I was awed when I saw her on the big screen. Now I am eagerly waiting to see what her next film would be all about."
On the professional front, Geeta is keeping the cards close to her chest. After two good back to back performances (The Train, Dil Diya Hai), she is making her moves carefully without signing multiple projects in a rush. In fact, she does have a biggie in her kitty already but is waiting for the producers to make a formal announcement.
Stay tuned as the petite girl makes much more than just her presence felt in 2008 which promises to be an eventful year for the upcoming actress.
First, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and now his teammate Yuvraj Singh. Budding actress Deepika Padukone is quite fed up and says reports about her engagement with Yuvraj Singh are not true at all.
"Please...this is the strangest thing I have heard, so far," said a visibly disturbed Deepika.
The actress was Thursday evening declared the new brand ambassador of Swiss watch brand Tissot.
Asked how endorsements work for actors, she said: "It works both ways. I mean celebrities connect the brand to the audience and the label connects them to the viewers, making them more popular."
Deepika, who is the daughter of former world badminton champion Prakash Padukone, said sports works to de-stress her: "I am very closely associated with sports. I have played games like badminton, basketball, tennis, throwball and baseball."
"My favourite sport is swimming however, any type of sport de-stresses me. It takes my mind off work and makes me feel relaxed," Padukone told.
The newcomer struck fame with her debut film "Om Shanti Om" opposite Shah Rukh Khan.
However, she denies being bogged down by any kind of pressure of meeting expectations while picking up projects or in her upcoming movies.
"No there is no such pressure on me! Dad taught me to enjoy my work and till the time I do so I will face the camera merrily.
"I always wanted to do an action flick and I am luckily doing 'Made In China'. Nikhil Advani is directing the film and I will share screen space with Akshay Kumar."
Apart from Deepika, viewers will soon see Priyanka Chopra doing heavy-duty action in "Love Story 2050" and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan swinging the sword in "Jodhaa-Akbar".
Commenting on the trend of more heroines taking up action roles she said: "This itself shows that with the evolution of the Hindi film industry women are getting to do more in films."
Deepika also has Siddharth Anand's next in her kitty where she is paired opposite Ranbir Kapoor.

If Shiney's current image of a 'starry' celebrity wasn't enough, reports about him passing derogatory comments in a magazine interview about his Gangster co-star Kangana Ranaut, made headlines!
We have no doubt about Shiney's acting ability and we totally admire the good-looking man for making a mark in Bollywood inspite of not having any filmy background!
However, we cannot help but notice how the man is being discussed everywhere for reasons other than his onscreen stupendous performances!
Just a few days back, in an interview with Indiatimes Movies , Shiney had clarified an allegation of him being high-handed by saying, "I can't understand why my name is being dragged into every controversy in town. Just because I don't react, people take it for granted. And, some section of the media adds spice to their stories without checking them with me. They think since Shiney doesn't have any backing and neither does he have any film background, so keep writing about it and no one will object to it."
However, as they say in the entertainment business, 'There is no smoke without fire' and that precisely seems to be the case with Shiney.
A crew member of Jahnu Barua's forthcoming film Har Pal told us, "Shiney threw loads of attitude on the sets of Har Pal . He would often complain that he had no time and acted as if he is the busiest Bollywood star. He would often snap at us, if and when we would request him to do an activity which was film related! For instance, he would crib and grumble even if we would ask him to pose for the movie stills, etc. His co-star Preity Zinta is a much bigger star but she was at her friendliest best! May be Shiney should have learnt something from Preity at least", complained our source.
"Preity Zinta on the contrary was humble and extremely sweet in spite of the fact that she is one of the
best actresses we have. She'd talk to all of us and make everyone around her comfortable" he further added.
Preity has always been inspiring but we wonder what Shiney has to say on this!
Actor Aamir Khan, who has lately been in the media spotlight for slamming the award winning film 'Black', says his upcoming directorial debut 'Taare Zameen Par' is the most important film on children to come out in India.
'In my opinion it is the most important film on children to come out of India. I mean in its content,' Aamir has written in his blog aamirkhan.com.
'How you all will like it I have no idea, but what I can say is that it has changed the way that I looked at my kids. And, mind you, I think that I am a good father. In fact it changed the way that I look at all children.
'As we take on the burdens of adulthood we often gradually distance ourselves from our children, even our own childhood. This script brought it all back into sharp focus for me,' he added.
'Taare Zameen Par' narrates the story of a dyslexic child and is slated for release on Dec 21.
The versatile actor is extremely excited about the release of his directorial debut.
'Have just reached home after completing the last bit of work on the film. I cannot believe it is finally over. Will be checking the print in a couple days, I hope there wont be any technical delays. The last one month has been killing. Can't wait for it to release now.'
However, the actor, who has been fondly termed as a perfectionist, strongly disagrees that the movie is a children's film.
''Taare...' is a film about children, not a children's film. It is aimed primarily at parents, and potential parents...youngsters who in a few years will become parents.'
Aamir is upbeat that his film would succeed in tapping the young audience.
'Of course, since it is about a nine-year-old boy, I expect that kids around eight years and above will identify with the boy and find the film engaging, moving and uplifting.
'I have no idea how kids below eight years will react to the film. Sure there are some fun moments for them like a couple of animation sequences, and the 'Bum bum bole' song, which I believe is a hot favourite with little kids, but in essence the film speaks to an eight years and above audience,' penned Aamir.
For the record, Khan's post, which was largely about his films, attracted 358 comments from his fans.
The actor recently caused a controversy by criticising Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film 'Black' on his blog, calling some scenes manipulative and over the top.
Ameesha Patel has been away from the limelight for quite a some time after the release of her super-hit film Bhool Bhulaiyaa.
So, whats the busty girl doing these days??
The buzz is that she is practicing salsa these days to keep fit and have fun at the same time.
Dancing and Ami go a long way. She hasn't only learnt Bharat Natyam in the past but has also taught the classical dance to some kids while she was in college.
Amisha's natural look and personal life makes news as much as her professional life. With the recent successes of Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. and Bhool Bhulaiyaa.. her career is on a high.
And now it's Kunal Kohli's next film, which is currently being shot until February next year and is looking for a release date in summer 2008. This is the movie for which she got a completely new look styled by Manish Malhotra and chopped off her long hair!
That was quite shocking to many people.. but it's what the directors wanted.
With or without her beautiful hair.. she's still got the looks!
